Visual artist Suzette van Dorsser worked with the students of Puni School to create a large scale public art work inspired by the Karearea (New Zealand falcon) and trees in the area.
Despite their threatened status, many karearea are can be seen flying around the skies in the Puni area.
Suzette says of the subject: "The reason why I chose the Karearea is because it can soar on the wind currents- it adapts, has beautiful movements and it can see things in a very special way. It will be the mascot for our ideas. The Karearea is always looking! With all its senses. - so to create our mural WE will need to start looking! And looking carefully. WE will have to start observing things from all angles - just like this amazing bird."
Workshops with students were undertaken, and the mural was be painted between August and October 2018.
