Description: Led by mural artist Brigita Botman, this project aimed to beautify a public facing area at Awhitu School while providing a unique learning opportunity for six students (aged 7 – 12). They were not only taught specialized painting techniques but were also encouraged to appreciate the local flora, fauna, and landmarks. The project allowed them to learn important skills while fostering a sense of connection with their surroundings. All the children at the school seemed to take a particular delight in seeing the recognizable landmarks of the mural, an image of Awhitu Penninsular.
Highlights: Teachers and parents were very pleased with the outcome, the students were engaged with local scenery and the mural artist made a great contribution to the distinctiveness of the area. Students were active participants in the painting, a mixture of learning environment, community engagement and collective action through art.
Feedback:“The [students] connection they felt to the mural seemed to indicate a strengthened feeling of belonging in their somewhat isolated community.” Brigita Botman (Mural Artist)
